Mark Wessel is an Assistant Professor in the Music Production and Engineering (MP&E) department at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught since 1996. He holds a B.S. in Mass Communication from Emerson College and brings over 30 years of professional experience in recording, film, and television audio. His work spans major labels including Sony, MCA, Rounder, and RCA Victor, and media projects for Miramax Films, National Public Radio, and Paramount Pictures. He was Grammy-nominated as the mix engineer for Irma Thomas’s Simply The Best: Live!
His teaching philosophy emphasizes critical listening, real-world production contexts, and an apprenticeship model that simulates professional studio environments. He teaches core courses in audio engineering and production, and is active in Berklee Online, offering courses such as Advanced Mixing and Mastering with Pro Tools and Critical Listening 1.
