Mark Thurston is a Visiting Professor of Complex Project and Programme Leadership at Loughborough University and the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction at University College London (UCL). He currently serves as CEO of Anglian Water, the largest water and water recycling company in England and Wales by geographic area. With over 35 years of experience, his expertise spans engineering, project management, and leadership roles in major infrastructure projects such as the London 2012 Olympics, Crossrail, and High Speed Two (HS2).
Education: Mark began his career as a technician apprentice at London Underground, earning a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (1986). He later obtained a Master’s degree in Engineering (Project) Management from Loughborough University’s Civil Engineering School.
Research Interests: Focuses on complex project leadership, infrastructure development, and sustainable construction practices. His career highlights include transformative roles in major public and private sector projects, emphasizing innovation and operational excellence.
Scientific Awards and Affiliations: Honorary Doctorates from UEL and Loughborough University; Honorary Fellow of the Association for Project Management (FAPM); Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE); Chartered Engineer (CEng); Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET).
