Russell Marshall is a Professor of Design and Human Modelling at the School of Design and Creative Arts, Loughborough University. As Associate Dean for Teaching, he leads strategic development of taught programmes and oversees learning and teaching policy across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He chairs key committees including Learning and Teaching, and staff-student liaison boards.
His academic background includes an MEng in Design and Manufacturing Engineering and a PhD in Modular Product Design, both from Loughborough University. He holds professional certifications: CEng (Chartered Engineer), MIET (Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology), and FHEA (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy).
Research focuses on Design Ergonomics, Digital Human Modelling (DHM), and Inclusive Design. Key projects include developing the HADRIAN tool for accessibility planning, defining direct vision standards for trucks in London, and studying human factors in ageing populations. His work bridges academic research with real-world applications in transport safety, manufacturing, and product design.
Publications span 20+ years, emphasizing DHM applications in safety engineering, ergonomic evaluations, and inclusive design methodologies. His work has influenced policy frameworks for vehicle safety standards and urban mobility systems.
Current leadership includes heading the Design Ergonomics Research Group, which collaborates with industry partners to address human-centered design challenges across diverse sectors.
