Mark Sutherland is the Judy and Randy Wilbourn Odyssey Professor of Biology at Hendrix College. He serves as Faculty Advisor for the Pre-Med Program and teaches courses in Biology, including BIOL 101 (Concepts of Biology), BIOL 340 (Microbiology), and BIOL 430 (Immunology). His academic background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas (1990), an M.S. from Old Dominion University (1984), and a B.S. from Kansas State University (1975).
His research interests align with his teaching areas, emphasizing microbiology, immunology, and biological systems relevant to pre-medical studies. He oversees the Arkansas Garden, which includes sections dedicated to rare plants, medicinal flora, and ecological studies.
Mentorship is central to his role, guiding students through pre-professional health resources and research opportunities. The Mark V. Sutherland Award, recognizing graduates embodying the college’s 'Unto the whole person' motto, reflects his influence on student development.
