Mark Smeltzer

Mark Smeltzer is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He specializes in the molecular pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus infections, particularly focusing on its role in orthopaedic infections, biofilm formation, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms. His work integrates molecular biology, proteomics, and nanotechnology to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

Dr. Smeltzer earned his Ph.D. from Kansas State University and completed postdoctoral training under Dr. John J. Iandolo. His research is supported by grants from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the Congressionally-Directed Medical Research Program, and the Texas Hip and Knee Foundation. Key collaborations include projects with Dr. Jingyi Chen (nanotherapeutics) and Dr. Alexandru Biris (bone regeneration scaffolds).
