Professor Mark Sidel holds the Chair in Global Justice (visiting) at the University of Liverpool's School of Law and Social Justice. He concurrently serves as Doyle-Bascom Professor of Law and Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His affiliations include the Charity Law and Policy Unit at Liverpool, NYU's US-Asia Law Institute, and the Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management at Baruch College.
Research focuses on legal frameworks governing nonprofits, civil society dynamics in authoritarian contexts (especially China and Vietnam), and philanthropy policy. He has held visiting roles at Harvard, Melbourne, Sciences Po, and SOAS. Sidel advises international organizations like the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Norwegian Centre for Human Rights on legal reform and civil society programming.
Professional memberships include the American Law Institute and boards of organizations such as the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law and China Medical Board. His recent work examines state-controlled volunteering in China and governance challenges in charitable trusts. Publications (2022–2024) analyze civil society repression, pandemic governance in authoritarian systems, and nonprofit education in legal curricula.
