Harvey P. Dale is the University Professor of Philanthropy and the Law at New York University School of Law and Director of the National Center on Philanthropy and the Law. He specializes in nonprofit law, tax law, and international legal frameworks governing charitable organizations.
Education: JD, Harvard Law School (cum laude, 1961); BA in Philosophy, Cornell University (1958).
Research focuses on legal challenges facing nonprofit sectors globally, including tax exemptions, international grantmaking, and governance structures. He advises governments in Australia, China, Mexico, Russia, the UK, and South Africa on nonprofit law reform.
Director of the National Center on Philanthropy and the Law, which maintains the world's most comprehensive nonprofit law library and publishes annual student analyses of critical sector issues.
Professional roles include former president/CEO of the Atlantic Foundation (1981–2001), founder of Atlantic Philanthropies, and member of Cornell University’s Investment Committee (1996–2005). Served as advisor to the American Law Institute’s Restatement of Charitable Nonprofit Organizations.
Awards: Honorary Doctor of Laws (2017, University of the Witwatersrand); American Academy of Arts & Sciences membership.
