Dr. Mark Schwartz is a Professor in the Anthropology Department at Grand Valley State University. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from Northwestern University. His research focuses on trade networks between Mesopotamian city-states and Anatolian societies in the 4th millennium BCE, with fieldwork experience in Turkey. Currently, he collaborates inter-departmentally using ROVs to study Great Lakes shipwrecks. He teaches courses on Near Eastern archaeology and general anthropological topics.
Dr. Schwartz has been assistant director of the Hirbemerdon Tepe Archaeological Project in Diyarbakir, Turkey, where he engaged students in research and is finalizing excavation publications. His work bridges land-based archaeological studies with emerging maritime archaeological technologies. He maintains affiliations with the department's laboratories including the ELVis Lab and Bio Lab.
