Mark Rau is an Assistant Professor of Music Technology at MIT with a shared appointment between the Music & Theater Arts Section and the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department. His research focuses on musical acoustics, audio signal processing, and physical modeling synthesis, particularly involving guitars and audio effects. He holds a PhD from Stanford’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), an MA in Music, Science, and Technology from Stanford, and a BS in Physics and BMus in Jazz from McGill University.
- Education: PhD (Stanford CCRMA), MA (Stanford), BS Physics/BMus Jazz (McGill)
His work integrates engineering principles with music technology, emphasizing hands-on design and measurement of musical instruments. Research interests include vibration analysis, acoustic measurement systems, and luthiery’s role in instrument acoustics modeling.
