Professor Mark Osborn is a molecular microbiologist and Dean of the School of Science at RMIT University's STEM College. He joined RMIT in 2013 as an Associate Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2017. Previously, he held roles such as Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Lincoln and Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Hull. His research focuses on environmental microbiology, microbial ecology, and biotechnology, with a particular emphasis on pollution microbiology, drinking water microbiology, and antibiotic resistance. He has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles, with a Google Scholar H-index of 43, and edited a textbook on molecular microbial ecology.
Teaching roles include coordinating courses like BIOL2256 Introduction to Microbiology and leading programs in environmental biotechnology. As Associate Dean (2016–2019), he managed over 80 courses across biosciences and food technology. His research group, 'Microbial Life,' investigates microbial responses to environmental pollution, collaborating with Melbourne Water on aquatic pollution prevention. Supervision of over 20 PhD students highlights his mentorship in areas like bioremediation and food microbiology.
His research spans microbial communities in plastics, hydrocarbon-contaminated soils, and drinking water systems. Notable projects include evaluating microbial indicators of pollution exposure and developing high-CO₂ packaging for meat preservation. He serves on editorial boards, including BMC Microbiology and the ISME Journal, and contributes to national and international scientific committees.
