معرفی
Professor Corinne Whitby is a leading environmental microbiologist at the University of Essex, affiliated with the School of Life Sciences. Her research focuses on microbial biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nitrogen, biodegradation of environmental pollutants (particularly petroleum hydrocarbons and naphthenic acids), and bioaerosol characterization. With over £12.1 million in research funding from UKRI, EU, and industry sources, she has published 52 peer-reviewed papers and supervised 22 PhD/MSc students.
Education
- Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology (NERC-CASE), University of Liverpool (1998)
- B.Sc. (Hons) in Applied Biology (Molecular Microbiology), University of Hull (1994)
Her research spans three primary areas: bioaerosol dynamics in urban/industrial micro-environments; biogeochemical cycling in aquatic and terrestrial systems; and hydrocarbon bioremediation using specialized microbial communities. Recent work examines nanoparticle impacts on microbial ecosystems and seagrass blue carbon habitats.
Scientific Awards
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
As Graduate Director at Essex (2019-present), she has established multidisciplinary collaborations across NERC, European Commission programs, and industry partners like Oil Spill Response Ltd. Her team investigates microbial responses to environmental stressors ranging from oil spills to nanomaterials.
