Mark Nichter is Regents' Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, Public Health, and Family Medicine at the University of Arizona. A sociocultural medical anthropologist, he conducts global health research addressing health disparities, ethnomedicine, and health systems.
Nichter's fieldwork spans South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Africa, investigating topics including tobacco control, zoonotic diseases, pharmaceutical practices, and disaster response. He founded Project Quit Tobacco International (QTI), developing cessation programs across India and Indonesia. Current research examines wound care management in Benin and Côte d'Ivoire, and tobacco cessation in Turkey.
His publications analyze global health governance, health policy implementation, and the cultural dimensions of illness. Nichter advocates engaged anthropology approaches through multi-stage formative research to address real-world health challenges.
Teaching has included courses on culture and health, ethnomedicine, and global health anthropology. He maintains active research collaborations addressing community-based health interventions and health system strengthening.
