Mark Nicholas

Mark Nicholas is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, affiliated with the Center for Demography and Ecology and the Interdisciplinary Training Program. His research examines how social policy and contextual stressors influence health, fertility, and family outcomes, with a focus on racial/ethnic and age disparities.

• Education: Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University (2023).

His methodologically diverse work includes quasi-experimental studies on sex education funding's impact on teen births, longitudinal analyses of the Great Recession's effects on fertility, and investigations into police contact's influence on student outcomes. His publications span journals like Sociology of Education, Demography, and Social Science and Medicine.

His departmental areas of interest include Demography, Social Stratification, Family, Methods and Statistics, Education, and Aging. He also explores racial inequality in education, particularly the intersection of educational and criminal justice systems.
