Mark Mullen is an Associate Professor of Writing at George Washington University, focusing on storytelling in alternate media forms, game studies, and nineteenth-century U.S. cultural practices. His research bridges historical letter-writing practices, digital and board games, and pedagogical innovation. He holds an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Canterbury (1990) and a Ph.D. in English from UC Irvine (1999).
Dr. Mullen’s current projects include editing a family correspondence collection from 1850s Minnesota migration and co-authoring Tabletop Teaching, a social justice-focused board game anthology. He was honored as a member of GW’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers, reflecting his commitment to innovative education strategies.
His publications span Rhetoric Review, Computers and Composition, and specialized gaming journals like Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds. Mullen teaches courses on media skepticism, game-based learning, and participatory democracy simulations.
