Associate Professor Mark Melatos is an economist specializing in international trade theory and policy at the University of Sydney, where he completed his PhD in 2002. He currently serves as Degree Director for the Executive Master of Arts and Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Previously, he held roles as Associate Dean (Postgraduate Coursework) and Sub-Dean (Academic Appeals and Progression). His research focuses on regional trade agreements, non-tariff barriers, and currency unions, published in journals like European Economic Review and The World Economy.
Education: BEc (Hons) from the University of Sydney, followed by a PhD in Economics from the same institution.
Research interests include international trade policy, economic reforms in Asia, and the impact of quarantine policies on trade. He has consulted for the OECD’s Trade and Agriculture Directorate and advised Australian government inquiries on trade matters. His work spans over 20 countries through visiting positions at institutions like the OECD, Copenhagen Business School, and the London School of Economics.
Teaching experience includes curriculum design for secondary and tertiary economics education, including a decade as Chief Examiner for the NSW HSC economics exam. He currently sits on the NSW Education Standards Authority’s HSC Standards Committee and the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Educators Advisory Panel.
Grants include funding from the Australian Research Council, Danish Research Council, and the European Commission. His research has addressed topics such as migration patterns in regional integration, flexibility in trade bloc design, and tariff wars between trade blocs.
Labs/Teams: Collaborative work through international research networks, particularly with OECD-affiliated projects and cross-university initiatives in Europe and North America.
