John Romalis is a Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at Macquarie University. He holds affiliations with the Data Horizons Research Centre. Previously, he held positions at the University of Sydney (2013–2022), Australian National University (2012–2013), and the University of Chicago (2001–2012). His research focuses on international trade, tax policy, and the economic impacts of globalization, particularly China’s growth. He has published in top journals like the American Economic Review and the Quarterly Journal of Economics.
Education: PhD in Economics (MIT, 2001), LLB(Hons) and B.Ec(Hons) from the University of Sydney (1994 and 1992 respectively).
Research emphasizes international trade determinants, trade policy effects, and global economic integration. Recent work examines trade sanctions, WTO impacts, and tariff policies. His articles analyze structural gravity models, optimal tariffs, and China’s influence on global prices.
Notable contributions include studies on the Doha Round, NAFTA’s effects, and the relationship between trade and exchange rate volatility. He has held visiting roles at Princeton, Dartmouth, and the IMF.
