Mark McClellan is a Professor of Practice in Economics at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. He holds dual expertise as a physician and economist, focusing on improving healthcare systems through policy reforms, payment models, and evidence-based innovation. Previously, he served as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), implementing major health policy reforms. Dr. McClellan has also held roles in the U.S. government, including membership in the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy.
His research emphasizes strategies to enhance healthcare outcomes while reducing costs, leveraging real-world evidence and fostering effective medical innovation. At Stanford University, he directed the Program on Health Outcomes Research as a professor of economics and medicine. His work bridges clinical practice, economic analysis, and public policy to address systemic challenges in healthcare delivery and financing.
