Mark Lewis serves as the Maxwell M. Upson Professor of Engineering and Director of the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering (ORIE) at Cornell University's College of Engineering. A leading expert in queueing theory, his work optimizes systems involving information flow, manufacturing processes, and human waiting across diverse contexts including telecommunications, healthcare, and industrial facilities.
His academic foundation includes:
- Bachelor's double major in Mathematics and Political Science from Eckerd College (Class of 1992)
- Master's degree from Florida State University
- Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology
Lewis's research pioneers mathematical modeling of waiting line dynamics, where he examines critical differences between inanimate systems (information/parts) and human behavior (abandonment tendencies). His engineering philosophy emphasizes actionable decision-making over pure observation, focusing on building improved systems that minimize waiting costs while maximizing efficiency through rigorous quantitative analysis.
Key recognition includes the William H. Kadel Alumni Medal for Outstanding Career Achievement awarded by Eckerd College in 2023.
As a trailblazer in academic diversity, Lewis was Cornell ORIE's first African American faculty hire and instrumental in recruiting the department's second Black professor a decade later. His DEI leadership within the College of Engineering reflects his commitment to expanding opportunities while drawing inspiration from mentors like Professor Walter Walker, Cornell's only Black faculty member during Lewis's student years.
