Professor Mark Harrison is a leading academic in sustainable agriculture and manufacturing at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), affiliated with the School of Mechanical, Medical, and Process Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering. He holds a BSc from the University of Queensland (1992) and a PhD in biochemistry (2001), followed by postdoctoral research at Newcastle University (UK). His career includes a Queensland Smart State Fellowship (2004) and industry collaborations like the $3.8M Syngenta-QUT partnership.
Research focuses on converting agricultural wastes into valuable products, including biofuels, nutraceuticals, and animal feed. Key areas include fiber modification for livestock digestion, biomass pretreatment, and microbial ecology applications. He leads projects on sugarcane biorefineries and transgenic crop integration. Awards include a 2019 appointment to the North Australia Beef Research Council and a 2018 Vice-Chancellor's Excellence nomination.
