Mark Hannesson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts. He holds a BMus from Brandon University, an MMus from the University of Alberta, and a DMA in Composition from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on acoustic and electroacoustic composition, human-computer interaction, experimental improvisation, and visual representation of music. He teaches courses in Composition, Music Technology, and Experimental Improvisation, leading the XiMe ensemble.
As a composer and sound artist, Hannesson creates instrumental, electronic, and mixed works. He is affiliated with the Wandelweiser Collective and has exhibited works internationally, including hidden intensions (Mexico City, 2009), The Safety of Blankets (Russia, 2012), and Method and Madness (Canada, 2012–2013). His recordings appear on labels such as Edition Wandelweiser Records and Cyland Audio Archive.
He actively performs live electronic music and recently contributed to the Extradition Ensemble's Extradition Plays Corner project, featuring a recorded performance of Philip Corner's work.
