Mark H. Chignell is a Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. He has been a faculty member since 1990, previously serving as an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California (1984–1990) and teaching in Monash University’s Psychology Department (1980–1982). He holds a PhD in Psychology (University of Canterbury, 1981) and an MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering (Ohio State, 1984).
He directed the Knowledge Media Design Institute (2013–2017) and held the BUL Chair in Human Computer Interaction. He is a visiting scientist at IBM’s Centre for Advanced Studies (since 2002) and Keio University (2005–2010).
Research Focus: Human factors in information technology, healthcare ergonomics, advanced user interfaces, and social computing. Applications span healthcare, e-commerce, and exergaming for healthy aging. His work emphasizes usability, accessibility, and innovation in digital systems.
Grants & Collaborations: Funded by NSERC, IBM, OCE, AGEWELL, and others. Founded Centivizer Inc., a UofT startup developing exergaming and cognitive assessment tools for aging populations.
Labs: Leads the Interactive Media Lab, focusing on innovative interface design and healthcare technology solutions.
