David M. Neyens is an Associate Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University. He directs the EAST Laboratory (Ergonomics, Analytics, Simulation, and Technology) and holds professional memberships in the Institute of Industrial Engineers and Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
Education:
- BS Industrial Engineering, University of Iowa (2005)
- MS Industrial Engineering, University of Iowa (2006)
- MPH with Ergonomics focus, University of Iowa (2008)
- PhD Industrial Engineering, University of Iowa (2010)
Research Focus: Dr. Neyens specializes in human factors engineering within healthcare systems, employing advanced analytical models to quantify human behavior in complex environments. His work examines technology's impact on performance and system effectiveness, spanning statistical modeling, task analysis, naturalistic decision-making, resilience engineering, health systems optimization, and transportation logistics. Current investigations include anesthesia workflows, healthcare chatbots, patient portal interactions, and gestural interface design.
Publication Trends: Recent research demonstrates strong emphasis on healthcare ergonomics and technology integration, with consistent output in top human factors journals. Work shows methodological diversity including observational studies, statistical modeling of national datasets, hierarchical Bayesian regression, and usability experiments. Primary application domains include surgical safety, health informatics, AI communication systems, and human-computer interaction.
Laboratory Leadership: Leads the EAST Lab focused on Ergonomics, Analytics, Simulation and Technology applications in complex systems (cecas.clemson.edu/east).
