His research examines how to integrate computational thinking into liberal arts and sciences contexts through approaches like 'Teaspoon languages' - simplified programming environments tailored to specific disciplinary needs. He has made significant contributions to broadening participation in computing education and developing frameworks for computational literacy across the curriculum.
His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on critical reflection in computing education, equitable data literacy development, and creating accessible programming pathways for diverse student populations including emergent bilingual students, arts and humanities students, and social studies learners. The body of work demonstrates his commitment to contextualized computing education that respects students' disciplinary identities while developing computational skills.
As a potential PhD faculty advisor, Professor Guzdial mentors graduate students in computing education research. His leadership extends to directing the Program in Computing for the Arts and Sciences, where he develops courses contextualized around creative expression and social justice that integrate computing across the liberal arts curriculum.
