Mark Gustafson is a Professor of Biology and Director of the Environmental Studies Program at Texas Lutheran University. He holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from Duke University and a B.A. in Biology and Mathematics from Luther College. His research focuses on biodiversity conservation, particularly through the Weston Ranch Research Project, and he has led over 10 study abroad trips to locations like Costa Rica and Belize. Dr. Gustafson actively collaborates with students on ecological studies, including prairie restoration and molecular plant identification. He has secured grants such as the NSF IUSE-HSI award for culturally responsive STEM education.

His research interests span biodiversity assessment, conservation strategies, and the integration of fieldwork with student learning. Recent presentations highlight his work on invasive species management and DNA barcoding of plant species in Texas. As a leader in environmental education, he directs the Texas Academy of Science student organization and oversees grant-funded initiatives to enhance STEM education equity.
