Mark Goodwin is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Exeter within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences and Department of Geography. He served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (2013-2022), Dean of the College of Life and Environmental Sciences (2010-2013), and Head of the School of Geography prior to that. He joined Exeter in 2004 after directing the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.
His academic background includes:
- Geography degree from the University of Sussex
- PhD from the London School of Economics (LSE)
Professor Goodwin's research centers on Human Geography with deep expertise in Political Geography and Local Governance. His work analyzes sub-national government structures across urban and rural contexts, developing geographically sensitive variants of regulation theory and advancing spatially informed strategic-relational state theory through interdisciplinary collaboration with political scientists and sociologists.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (2011)
He has directed externally funded research projects totaling over £2 million from the ESRC, Welsh Assembly Government, and Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Notably, he is the only geographer to hold ESRC grants in both the Local Governance Research Programme and Devolution and Constitutional Change Research Programme, and chaired the ESRC Centres Competition while serving on the ESRC Strategic Research Board.
