Professor Gill Valentine serves as Professor of Geography and Provost & Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Sheffield's School of Geography and Planning. Her leadership spans academic research, institutional governance, and international scholarly collaboration.
Her research centers on three interconnected domains: diversity and social inclusion, childhood and family life, and urban cultures and consumption. Notable projects include the ERC Advanced Investigator award 'Living with Difference in Europe' (UK/Poland), AHRC intergenerational justice research across China/Uganda/UK, and ESRC studies on post-conflict identities. She pioneers innovative methodologies like audio-diaries and public art engagement with hard-to-reach populations.
Valentine's accolades include the RGS Murchison Award for geography of difference research, RGS Gill Memorial Award for gender contributions, Philip Leverhulme Prize, and Sage Innovation Prize. She holds triple fellowship status with the British Academy, Academy of Social Sciences, and Royal Geographical Society.
She has supervised 22+ postgraduate students (including current ERC-funded projects on Warsaw group tensions and Tibet tourism) and examined 30+ PhDs internationally. Research funding exceeds £5 million across 15+ grants from ERC, ESRC, AHRC, Leverhulme Trust, and government departments including DfE and DWP.
Her collaborative networks span creative sector partners in the AHRC intergenerational justice project, cross-national teams in Poland/Denmark/South Africa/Uganda, and advisory roles for ESRC, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and Netherlands research assessment committees.
