Dr. Mark Fairchild is a Distinguished Professor in the Color Science Program at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), affiliated with the College of Science and the Munsell Color Science Laboratory. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Imaging Science from RIT and a Ph.D. in Vision Science from the University of Rochester. His roles include Director of the Ph.D. Program in Color Science and leadership in the Munsell Lab since 1996. He has authored over 300 publications and books on color science, including *Color Appearance Models* and *Handbook of Color Psychology*. His research focuses on color perception, HDR imaging, and wine color analysis.
He has received prestigious awards such as the Bartleson Award (1995), Macbeth Award (2002), Davies Medal (2007), and IS&T Raymond C. Bowman Award (2008). He is a Fellow of IS&T and OSA. Fairchild has advised 59 graduate students and contributed to over 30 years of externally-sponsored research. Currently teaching courses like *Modeling Visual Perception*, he transitioned to part-time status in 2022, planning to retire fully in 2026.
His work spans foundational color science, applied imaging technologies, and educational outreach. Notable projects include the HDR Photographic Survey and books like *Munsell Trees: A Season of Leaves and Colors*. He maintains active roles in professional societies (ISCC, SID, CIE) and explores interdisciplinary topics like the intersection of color science and philosophy through his blog *Zen Tao Color*.
