Mark Eisenegger is a Full Professor of Public Sphere & Society at the University of Zurich's Institute of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ), serving as Co-Director and Director of Studies since 2020. He leads the Department of Public Sphere and Society and heads the Research Center for Public Opinion and Society (fög). His roles include President of the Kurt Imhof Foundation for Media Quality and editorial leadership in key journals like Communication Theory.
He holds a PhD in Philosophy (2004) from the University of Zurich, with studies in sociology, journalism, and computer science. Prior roles include Full Professor at the University of Salzburg (2015–2018) and Visiting Professorships across Europe.
Eisenegger's research focuses on digital structural change in the public sphere, media quality, and organizational communication. Key interests include crisis communication, media governance, and the impact of tech corporations on public discourse. His work addresses challenges to democratic processes through analyses of news consumption, misinformation, and public opinion dynamics.
Major projects include the Yearbook Quality of the Media, National Research Programme 77 (digital transformation), and studies on AI in journalism. He collaborates internationally, emphasizing transdisciplinary approaches to media and communication science.
Grants and recognitions include leadership in the Swiss National Science Foundation initiatives and contributions to policy debates on public service media sustainability. Eisenegger regularly publishes in top journals and advises media policy bodies like the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM).
