Mark Durden is a Professor of Photography and Director of the European Centre for Documentary Research at the University of South Wales, UK. He holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Kent and has taught at institutions including Staffordshire University and the University of Derby. His research focuses on photography’s intersection with art theory, modernist architecture, and documentary practices. Durden has supervised over 20 doctoral students, many of whom have produced groundbreaking work on topics ranging from Holocaust memory to post-Yugoslav identity.
His academic career spans roles at multiple universities, with notable periods as Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) in Photography at Derby and as Reader in Photography. His creative output includes collaborations like the Aldo Rossi San Cataldo Cemetery project with João Leal, exploring architectural melancholy through photography. Durden frequently engages with media and public lectures, recently presenting at events like the Modernism Architecture Photography Symposium and the Sophia Journal International Conference.
Research interests include the photographic book form, contemporary art criticism, and the ethics of documentary practice. He has published extensively in journals like 1000 Words and 1854 Photography, with a focus on curation and visual analysis. His work bridges artistic practice, academic research, and public engagement, emphasizing photography’s role in cultural and historical discourse.
