Mark Kasumovic is a Senior Lecturer in Photography and Video at De Montfort University, within the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. He is also Programme Leader for the BA Photography and BA Photography and Video programs. Based in Leicester, UK, he is a Canadian-born artist whose work bridges art, science, and technology.
Education:
- PhD in Fine Art and Visual Communication, Western University (2018)
- MFA in Fine and Media Arts, NSCAD University (2012)
- BFA in Image Arts (Photography), Ryerson University (2009)
His research investigates the truth-value and limitations of photography, especially in relation to scientific instruments and knowledge production. Projects such as A Human Laboratory, Picture/Perfect, and Ideal Landscapes explore digital imaging as data, the artificiality of landscape, and the role of technology in shaping perception. His work often involves collaborations between artists and scientists, using visual arts-based research to interrogate scientific practices.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in interdisciplinary and practice-led research, merging documentary forms with speculative and critical inquiry. Themes include radical documentary, artistic residencies, and the role of the artist as researcher, particularly in scientific contexts.
