Mark DeRuiter

Mark DeRuiter is a Professor and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). He also serves as Director of the Doctor of Clinical Science in Medical Speech-Language Pathology Program, Director of Admissions for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Programs, and Director of Accredited Graduate Programs. His academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Minnesota, an MBA from Augsburg University, and MA and BA degrees from Michigan State University.

Research interests focus on professional ethics, communication sciences and disorders education, and auditory processing. He has published extensively on clinical education, interprofessional collaboration, and professional standards. Awards include ASHA's Dorothy Dreyer Award for Volunteerism and CAPCSD Honors. DeRuiter actively contributes to professional organizations like ASHA, where he serves as Vice President for Standards and Ethics in Audiology.

He oversees admissions and accreditation for Pitt's AuD and SLP programs, emphasizing holistic review processes. His work bridges academic leadership with clinical education innovation, advocating for rigorous yet accessible pathways for future healthcare professionals.
