Professor Mark Davis is a Professor of Economic Sociology and Deputy Head of School (Strategy) at the University of Leeds' School of Sociology and Social Policy. He founded the Bauman Institute and co-leads the Relational Energy Group. His research focuses on alternative economies, climate futures, and the sociology of consumerism. He has pioneered initiatives like Local Climate Bonds, raising £12M for net-zero projects, and contributed to energy retrofit policies. Davis has held roles including expert advisor to the Council of Europe and is set to be the 2025 British Science Association President of Sociology and Social Policy.
Education: PhD (Sociology, University of Leeds), MA (Sociology, University of Leeds), BA (Social Science, Newcastle University). Professional memberships include the British Sociological Association and European Sociological Association.
Research interests span relational sociology, green finance, and climate policy. His work emphasizes collective solutions to systemic challenges like climate breakdown. He has published extensively, including monographs on Bauman’s theory and edited volumes on sociological metaphor. Current projects include evaluating green energy finance and retrofit policies.
Supervises three PhD students and has mentored 7 post-doc researchers. His work features on BBC, The Guardian, and in podcasts. Grants secured include EU Horizon 2020 and UKRI funding. He directs the Leeds Retrofit Accelerator Hub and collaborates with industry and civil society for sustainability solutions.
