Dr. Mark D. Busa is a Professor of Physics and Physical Sciences at Middlesex Community College (MxCC), affiliated with the School of Allied Health, Business, and STEM. He holds a B.S. in Geology from New Mexico Tech, M.S. and Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Connecticut. His career includes industry roles in geophysical exploration, hydrogeology, and environmental engineering, alongside academic teaching at Quinebaug Valley Community College and the University of New Haven. His research focuses on metamorphic petrology, structural geology, and geophysical techniques, particularly on staurolite porphyroblasts in the Bolton syncline. He actively contributes to MxCC’s rock collection and collaborates with engineering faculty on interdisciplinary programs.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Geology, New Mexico Tech
- Master of Science in Geology, University of Connecticut
- Doctor of Philosophy in Geology, University of Connecticut
Research Interests: Dr. Busa’s work explores the structural and metamorphic history of rocks, with a focus on staurolite porphyroblasts, deformation mechanisms, and geophysical applications in hydrogeology. His studies integrate field observations, microstructural analysis, and geophysical tools to understand tectonic processes. He also emphasizes undergraduate education through hands-on collections and experiential learning.
Professional Activities: Affiliated with the American Institute of Professional Geologists, Connecticut Geological Society, and Epsilon Pi Tau. His contributions span peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, and guidebooks on metamorphic and structural geology.
Teaching & Collaboration: Teaches a range of courses including physics, earth science, and engineering. Collaborates with Professors Lin Lin and Hubert Godin on manufacturing and engineering programs, bridging theory and applied science.
