S. Tholen is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Geosciences (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz), affiliated with the Tectonics and Structural Geology Group. He leads the ICDP project “Drilling the Ivrea-Verbano Zone (DIVE),” focusing on linking electrical conductivity to microstructural and mineralogical properties of crustal rocks. His research bridges microscale deformation processes in lower crust/upper mantle rocks to lithospheric-scale geophysical behaviors.
- Academic Background: PhD (2018–2023) in Tectonics/Structural Geology from Goethe University Frankfurt; MSc (2012–2015) in Structural Geology/Petrology from University of Cologne; BSc (2008–2012) in Paleoclimatology from Eberhard-Karls University Tübingen.
- Professional Roles: Directed the Geological Preparation Laboratory at Geozentrum Frankfurt (2022–2023); worked as an engineering geologist in environmental/hydrogeological consulting (2015–2018).
Research Focus: Microstructural evolution of mantle shear zones, melt-assisted deformation, and geophysical property linkages. Uses optical, geochemical, and geophysical tools to study deformation-reaction feedbacks in rocks from the Ivrea-Verbano Zone, Ronda Peridotite, and Erro-Tobbio.
Publications emphasize multidisciplinary approaches to crustal deformation, including studies on phase mixing in mantle rocks and electrical conductivity modeling at DIVE drill sites. Active in field-based research and laboratory analytics.
