Bjarne Almqvist is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Rock Physics with a specialization in magnetism at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University. He has held this position since May 2013 and previously worked as a Post-doctoral fellow at ETH Zurich (2010–2013). His educational background includes a D.Sc. in Geophysics (ETH-Zürich, 2010), an M.Sc. in Geology (Lakehead University, 2006), and an H.B.Sc. in Anthropology (Lakehead University, 2003).

His research investigates the dynamics of continental crust and its physical properties, combining field work, laboratory experiments, and modeling to understand crustal deformation during tectonic events (orogeny), crustal mechanics, and mass transport. Key methodologies include magnetic susceptibility analysis, seismic anisotropy, and structural geology.
Recent publications (2025–2021) emphasize magnetic fabrics, tectonic processes, and climate proxies. Topics include the role of magnetosomal greigite in sedimentary magnetic fabrics, hydromechanical fracture behavior in crystalline rock, multi-frequency magnetic susceptibility in loess-paleosol sequences, and the influence of mafic intrusions on Caledonian basement deformation. These studies often involve drilling projects (COSC-1, COSC-2), numerical modeling, and international collaborations.
Research Collaborations: Notable collaborations include projects at ETH Zurich, Lakehead University, and the ICDP drilling initiative. His work frequently intersects with seismic properties, magnetic mineralogy, and tectonic modeling.
