Mark Czarnota serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, based at the Griffin Campus. His work integrates research, extension, and teaching to address critical challenges in specialty crop production systems.
His academic credentials include:
- B.S. in Plant Science from the University of Delaware (1989)
- M.S. in Agriculture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1995)
- Ph.D. in Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture from Cornell University (2001)
Dr. Czarnota's research program focuses on developing integrated weed management strategies for ornamental crops, small fruits, and Christmas trees. His investigations span weed biology, invasive species control, and the evaluation of natural products as herbicidal agents, with particular attention to growth regulators and adjuvants that enhance chemical efficacy in horticultural settings. Current efforts emphasize identifying Christmas tree species adaptable to Southeastern U.S. growing conditions.
His professional responsibilities are distributed as 58% research, 32% extension, 5% teaching (including CRSS4340L/6340L Weed Science Laboratory), and 5% service. This allocation reflects his strong emphasis on generating practical field solutions while disseminating knowledge to industry stakeholders through extension activities.
