Mark Copelovitch is Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He serves as Director of European Studies at UW-Madison and holds the European Commission's Jean Monnet Chair in the European Union and the Global Economy (2022-2025). In 2024, he was the Axel Springer Fellow at the American Academy of Berlin and a Visiting Researcher in the Transformations of Democracy Research Group at the WZB (Berlin Social Center). He is affiliated with the Center for European Studies, the Center for German and European Studies, and the Jean Monnet European Union Center of Excellence at UW-Madison.
Dr. Copelovitch earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University in 2005 and his B.A. in Political Science from Yale College in 1997. His academic journey has focused on the intersection of political science and economics, particularly in international relations.
Professor Copelovitch specializes in international political economy and international organizations, with particular expertise in the politics of international trade, international finance, the International Monetary Fund, and European integration. His research examines the political economy of international money and finance, the political economy of the Eurozone, and the EU's role in the global economy. He has published extensively in top journals including Comparative Political Studies, the Journal of Politics, International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, and the Review of International Organizations. His books include "The International Monetary Fund in the Global Economy: Banks, Bonds, and Bailouts" (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and "Banks on the Brink: Global Capital, Securities Markets, and the Political Roots of Financial Crises" (Cambridge University Press, 2020, with David A. Singer).
His recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on financial crises, the political economy of the Eurozone, international organizations in the era of populism, and US financial dominance. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with empirical analysis of global economic governance challenges.
Professor Copelovitch has received several prestigious awards including the 2016-2017 Vilas Associates Award from the Social Studies Division and was UW-Madison's nominee for the Carnegie Fellows program in 2014-2015. Most notably, he was awarded the Jean Monnet Chair in the European Union and the Global Economy by the European Commission, a competitive global selection that recognizes his contributions to EU studies.
As a dedicated educator and mentor, Professor Copelovitch teaches courses across undergraduate and graduate levels including Introduction to International Relations, International Political Economy, Comparative Regional Integration (focusing on the European Union), and specialized seminars on global financial relations. His current research projects include "Dollar Signs: US Financial Dominance and the Future of American Power, Prosperity, and Democracy," which examines the causes and consequences of US dollar dominance in global finance.
Professor Copelovitch leads several research initiatives examining monetary policy, financial governance, and European integration. His work often involves collaboration with scholars across disciplines and institutions, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary approaches to understanding complex global economic phenomena. His current research agenda addresses critical contemporary challenges including the war in Ukraine, high inflation, authoritarian threats to democracy, climate change, and the rise of China in the global economic order.
