Mark Chen is a Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise at Teesside University's School of Health and Life Sciences. He holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of East London, an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science from Leeds Metropolitan University, and a PhD in 'Perception-action coupling in goal-directed locomotion' from the University of Hull. A HCPC-registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist, he has provided consultancy services for various sports organizations and athletes since joining Teesside University in 2008.
His research focuses on psychological consequences of sports injuries, attentional aspects of sports performance, and career transitions in sport. Key themes include mental toughness, mindfulness practices, and body image challenges among athletes. He collaborates internationally on gender equity issues in sports, particularly regarding eligibility criteria for female athletes and policy frameworks.
Chen has published widely on topics such as psychological interventions for swimmers, body image in powerlifters, and fairness in sports policy. His work bridges practical psychology applications with ethical considerations in competitive sports environments.
He welcomes PhD applications in his core research areas and actively engages in interdisciplinary collaborations to advance sports psychology research and its real-world applications.
