Mark Chatarpal is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Vassar College since 2025. His work bridges Cultural Anthropology, Food Studies, Caribbean Studies, and Indigenous Studies, focusing on the politics of food security policy formulation in CARICOM nations.
- Education: BA from the University of Toronto; MA and PhD from Indiana University-Bloomington.
His research explores how indigenous communities in Guyana, Belize, and Ghana navigate national food policies and advocate for culturally aligned frameworks. He has conducted 7 years of ethnographic research with local government ministries, indigenous NGOs, and international organizations.
Mark combines academic rigor with applied work, notably collaborating for 3 years with Guyana's National Toshao Council to redefine 'agriculture' in the 2006 Amerindian Act, aligning it with UN Indigenous Rights declarations. He recently served as a Food Policy Specialist for the Forest Peoples Programme.
