Dr. Mark Cantrell is an Associate Professor of English at Shepherd University, appointed since 2009. His academic background includes a B.F.A. in Drama and Theatre and an A.B. in English from the University of Georgia, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in English (with a minor in Philosophy) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to Shepherd, he taught at the University of Miami from 2005 to 2009.
His research focuses on experimental poetry, modernist/postmodernist literature, literary theory, and intersections with philosophy, cognitive science, and music. His current book project explores 'enactive poetics,' examining how readers enact thought processes embedded in literary texts.
Dr. Cantrell has published essays on figures like John Cage, Joan Retallack, J.L. Austin, and Jacques Derrida, as well as a study analyzing heavy metal adaptations of Melville’s *Moby-Dick*. His teaching and research emphasize interdisciplinary connections between literature and other fields.
