Mark Bernards is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Western University. His research focuses on plant secondary metabolites, phytochemicals, and their ecological roles, particularly in plant defense mechanisms and suberin biosynthesis. Bernards leads the Bernards Lab, which investigates how plants use small molecules like suberin and phytochemicals to interact with their environment and resist pathogens. He teaches undergraduate courses such as Biology 3660B (Plant Metabolism) and graduate seminars on analytical methods in biological research. His work integrates chemical, biochemical, and molecular approaches to understand plant-microbe interactions and wound-induced suberization. Current lab members and alumni contribute to studies on topics like viral pathogenesis, soil microbiota, and metabolic pathways. Bernards collaborates widely, publishing on topics ranging from plant virus biology to avian microbiology.
Research Interests: Bernards explores plant natural products' ecological functions, including suberin's role in barrier formation and stress response. His lab combines transcriptomics, metabolomics, and biochemical assays to dissect metabolic pathways involved in phytochemical production. Key projects include analyzing wound-induced suberin deposition in potatoes and studying ginsenoside-metabolizing enzymes in plant pathogens.
