Dylan Kosma

Dylan Kosma is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Nevada, Reno. His research is centered on understanding the biosynthesis and function of plant lipid polymers, particularly cutin and suberin, and their roles in plant environmental adaptation and stress tolerance. He leads the Kosma Lab, which employs a multidisciplinary approach combining biochemistry, analytical chemistry, and molecular genetics.

Research Focus:

Dr. Kosma's work delves deep into the macromolecular structure and functional significance of cutin and suberin, the most abundant natural lipid polymers on Earth. These polymers form critical barriers in plant aerial and subterranean tissues, protecting against abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and heavy metals. His lab investigates the biosynthetic pathways of these polymers, their genetic regulation, and their evolutionary diversification across plant species.

Recent publications highlight his exploration of cuticular wax biosynthesis, wound-induced suberization, and lipid remodeling under stress. His team has also contributed to understanding the genomic evolution of crop species and the biotechnological applications of lipid engineering in plants like Camelina sativa and potato.

Laboratory and Contact:

Dr. Kosma directs a well-equipped lab in the Howard Medical Sciences (HMS) Building, Room 207, at the University of Nevada, Reno. The lab supports graduate and undergraduate research in plant lipid biology and stress physiology.
