Mark Berends is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters. He holds leadership roles including former director of the Institute for Educational Initiatives (IEI), Associate Vice President for Research, and director of the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity (CREO). His research focuses on educational reform, school choice, and the impact of family and school environments on student outcomes. He has authored numerous books and articles, including the SAGE Handbook of the Sociology of Education (2024) and Opportunities for Learning: A Sociological Perspective (2025).
Berends' education includes a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has held roles at Vanderbilt University, RAND Corporation, and the National Center on School Choice. His awards include Fellowship in the National Academy of Education and AERA, and co-editorships of major journals.
His research emphasizes school organization and instructional quality, particularly in charter, Catholic, and traditional public schools. Recent projects include evaluations of Indiana’s Choice Scholarship Program and the impact of voucher and charter schools on achievement gaps. He has secured over $6 million in grants, including from the U.S. Department of Education and the Walton Family Foundation.
Berends leads interdisciplinary teams and collaborates with institutions like ACE Haiti and the National Center on School Choice. His work bridges policy analysis with empirical research, addressing equity in education systems.
