Dr. Mark Andrew James serves as the Operations Director of the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS) within the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. His role involves coordinating marine science activities across 17 Scottish universities and government bodies, managing a £75m Scottish Funding Council initiative. He also co-leads the NERC Scottish Universities Partnership for Environmental Research (SUPER) Doctoral Training Programme and holds non-executive roles in UK marine policy bodies like the UK Marine Science Co-ordination Committee.
Research interests focus on fisheries, aquaculture, marine renewables, and biogenic reefs. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly ocean conservation and sustainable resource use. Notable recent projects include the £12.4m Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources Programme and Everyfish, a Horizon-funded initiative for fisheries data innovation.
