Julia Sutherland is a Research Fellow at the School of Biology, University of St Andrews, based at the Scottish Oceans Institute in St Andrews, UK. Her work focuses on marine apex predator ecology, particularly killer whale-seal interactions in Shetland waters.
Her research examines ecological drivers of predator-prey dynamics in marine renewable energy development zones, with emphasis on conservation implications and cetacean behavioral adaptations. Recent projects investigate foraging consequences for orca social structures and evidence-based marine management frameworks.
Dr. Sutherland received the MASTS Marine Technology & Innovation award in 2021 for her contributions to marine science. Media recognition includes BBC Autumnwatch 2022 coverage and features on orca maternal foraging strategies.

She actively disseminates findings through invited presentations at JNCC conservation forums, Seawatch Foundation's OrcaWatch program (2021-2024), and MASTS Annual Science Meetings. Her collaborative work tracks top predators in energy development areas alongside researchers from multiple Scottish institutions.
Based at the Scottish Oceans Institute, she contributes to marine conservation policy through field studies of Shetland's inshore ecosystems and participates in interdisciplinary workshops on renewable energy environmental assessments.
