Mark Anderson is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with office address BESY 126, Lincoln, NE 68588-0340. Contactable via phone (402-472-2663) or email (mra@unl.edu).
He earned his Ph.D. in 1985 from the University of Colorado-Boulder.
His research focuses on polar climate dynamics, particularly snow-melt monitoring using passive microwave remote sensing to track spatial-temporal variations and atmospheric changes during melt periods. Additional interests include Great Plains weather phenomena such as heavy snowfall thermodynamics, precipitation regimes, aircraft icing, and tornado climatology. Expertise spans weather analysis/forecasting, winter weather, and satellite remote sensing.
Teaching covers synoptic, mesoscale, and satellite meteorology, with seminars on mountain meteorology, climatology, and mesoscale modeling.
Recent publications (2015-2019) emphasize applied meteorology in cold regions, including winter severity indices for transportation, Arctic ice melt timing, pavement temperature impacts from clouds, tornado warning systems, and convection forecasting algorithms.
He supervises graduate projects on regional weather phenomena but no specific awards are documented.
