Paul Markowski

Paul Markowski serves as the Department Head and Professor in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at The Pennsylvania State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

Dr. Markowski's research focuses on the dynamics and prediction of convective storms and their attendant hazards, particularly tornadoes. His work bridges theoretical meteorology with practical forecasting applications, utilizing state-of-the-art observations, computer simulations, and theoretical approaches. He specializes in atmospheric convection, mesoscale meteorology, severe weather phenomena, and atmospheric dynamics, with an emphasis on applying research findings to operational meteorology problems. His research group is actively engaged in advancing our understanding of severe convective systems and improving prediction capabilities for hazardous weather events.

As an educator, Dr. Markowski teaches courses in atmospheric dynamics, mesoscale meteorology, synoptic meteorology, and atmospheric convection, mentoring the next generation of meteorologists and atmospheric scientists.

Dr. Markowski leads the Markowski research group, which is dedicated to studying the complex dynamics of convective storms and developing improved forecasting methodologies for severe weather events.
