Martin Baxter is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Central Michigan University, within the College of Science and Technology. He has been a faculty member since 2006, contributing significantly to meteorology education and research. He is currently on sabbatical at NC State University and the National Weather Service in Raleigh, NC.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Meteorology, St. Louis University, 2006
- M.S. in Meteorology, St. Louis University, 2003
- B.S. in Meteorology, University of Missouri-Columbia, 2001
Dr. Baxter's research focuses on synoptic meteorology, precipitation systems, numerical weather prediction, and forecast verification. He specializes in snow-to-liquid ratio climatology and mesoscale processes in cyclones. His work bridges academic research and operational forecasting, aiming to improve real-world weather prediction.
His recent publications highlight trends in snowfall distribution, precipitation reforecasting, and the impacts of convection on downstream weather. These works fall within the broader disciplines of atmospheric science, climatology, and operational meteorology, with specific emphasis on mesoscale dynamics and forecast accuracy.
Scientific Awards:
- 2025 Edward N. Lorenz Teaching Excellence Award, American Meteorological Society
- 2013-2014 CMU College of Science and Technology Sabbatical Fellowship Award
- 2012 Editor’s Award, Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society
- 2009-2010 CMU Excellence in Teaching Award
Dr. Baxter has successfully mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students in research, many of whom have presented at national conferences and pursued careers in forecasting and academia. He has secured multiple research grants from NOAA and CMU, supporting projects on snowfall distribution and numerical model predictability. He is actively involved in professional service, including editorial roles for meteorological journals and training workshops for forecasters.
He leads the Mid-Mitten Weather View student forecasting group and advises the student chapter of the American Meteorological Society at CMU.
