معرفی
Professor Mark Allen is a distinguished academic specializing in Earth Sciences at the University of Durham, where he serves as Professor and Director of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Department of Earth Sciences. He also holds membership in the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies at Durham University.
- Head of Department, Earth Sciences (August 2021 - present)
- Professor, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Durham (2014 - present)
- Deputy Director, Natural Sciences, University of Durham (2013 - 2015)
- Reader, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Durham (2005 - 2014)
Professor Allen's research focuses on interdisciplinary studies of Eurasian orogenic belts and sedimentary basins, with particular emphasis on the interactions of deformation, climate and sedimentation in tectonically active regions such as the Caspian and the Zagros mountains of Iran. His work extends to petroleum systems analysis at various scales and the study of young volcanic rocks of the Iranian plateau, including serving as Principal Investigator for a NERC-funded project on Orogenic Plateau Magmatism. He employs diverse techniques including field-based structural geology, clastic sedimentology, remote sensing, geomorphology, basin modeling, regional synthesis, igneous geochemistry, and seismic interpretation.
His publication record spans from 1989 to 2025, with recent work focusing on subduction dynamics, mantle processes, orogenic plateau formation, and the tectonic evolution of regions including China, Iran, and the Tibetan Plateau. His research demonstrates consistent engagement with fundamental questions in Earth Sciences while maintaining practical applications in resource exploration and hazard assessment.
- Editor, Solid Earth (2017 - present)
- Editor-in-chief of Geological Magazine (2003 - 2017)
- Editorial board member, Tectonophysics (2005 - present)
- Member of Council, Geological Society, London (2021 - present)
- AAPG Jules Braunstein Award (2004)
Professor Allen has supervised several students including Rhiannon Morgan and Ugurcan Cetiner (PhD). His research has been supported by multiple grants, including the NERC Standard Grant 'Orogenic Plateau Magmatism' (2011-2014) where he served as Principal Investigator. He has organized numerous conferences and workshops, delivered keynotes at major international meetings including the EGU Annual Meeting, and collaborated extensively with researchers worldwide.
