Marja Sorvari is Professor of Russian Literature and Culture at the University of Eastern Finland, appointed to this position on November 1, 2022. She is affiliated with the School of Humanities, Philosophical Faculty at the Joensuu Campus. Previously, she served as Associate Professor of Russian Language and Culture at the University of Eastern Finland (2018-2022), University Lecturer in Russian (2010-2018), and held a fixed-term professorship at the University of Tampere (2012-2013).
Her educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy (2004), Licentiate of Philosophy (2000), and Master of Arts (1997), all from the University of Tampere, where she also held a Docentship in Russian Literature and Culture since 2010.
Professor Sorvari specializes in post-Soviet Russian literature with particular focus on gender perspectives, cultural memory, and multilingualism. Her research examines Russian women's autobiographical texts, multi- and translingual literature, displacement narratives, and the reception of Russian literature in Finland. She has published two monographs, numerous peer-reviewed articles, and co-edited several collections. Her PhD dissertation explored Russian women's autobiographical texts of the 1990s.
Her recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate a consistent focus on women's writing, migration narratives, memory studies, and the translation of Russian literature. A significant portion of her work analyzes how geopolitical events, particularly Russia's invasion of Ukraine, impact literary production, translation practices, and academic approaches to Russian culture. She leads the research group "Russia in translation" (2022-present), reflecting her ongoing commitment to understanding the complex cultural exchanges between Finland and Russia.
- Major Research Themes:
- Women's writing in post-Soviet contexts
- Translingual and multilingual literature
- Cultural memory and postmemory
- Translation studies and paratextual analysis
- Finnish-Russian literary relations
- Gender studies in Russian literature
Professor Sorvari has been vocal about the changing landscape of Russian studies following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, noting how this geopolitical shift necessitates reconsideration of terminology (e.g., "Russian literature" vs. "Russian-language literature") and approaches to the field. She has emphasized that while the war has sharpened attitudes toward Russian culture, there will always be those interested in understanding Finland's neighboring country through its literature and language.
